The third-generation Mazda CX-5 will offer stronger value and prices around $6000 cheaper than a Toyota RAV4 when it hits showrooms this June, but it’s bad news if you’re waiting for a hybrid version – that won’t arrive until at least 2028.

Mazda has confirmed pricing and local specifications for the bigger and better equipped version of its best-selling SUV, with prices creeping up between $1000 and $3000 depending on the model grade.

The modest price rises coincide with a stronger value proposition that brings an increase in space, comfort and standard equipment across the range. Every model in the line-up is now all-wheel drive, for example, rather than cheaper variants being front-drive as before, and customers will also benefit from larger interior screens and more advanced safety systems.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 model range kicks off with the G25 Pure for $39,990 before on-road costs. That’s $2750 more expensive that the outgoing G20 Maxx which previously opened the range, although the new model adds all-wheel drive, a larger 2.5-litre engine, bigger 12.9-inch centre touchscreen, front cross traffic braking, and ‘cruising and traffic support’ which combines adaptive cruise control and steering assistance.

“It’s approximately a $3000 saving over the outgoing G20 Maxx,” said Mazda Australia’s director of sales and marketing, Jarrod Gieschen. “Customers are gaining significant value over the outgoing model.”

The CX-5 range then progresses through the G25 Evolve for $42,990 (+$2030), Touring for $47,490 (+$1000) and GT SP which starts at $51,990 (+$1030). As before, the Akera trim level sits as the flagship of the range for $54,990 (+$1840).

Mazda expects the Evolve to be the most popular variant, followed by the Pure and Touring. Seven exterior colours are available as standard: Rhodium White, Aero Grey, Soul Red, Navy Blue Mica, Polymetal Grey, Machine Grey and Jet Black.

Size wise, the new-gen CX-5 is 115mm longer, 15mm wider and 30mm taller than the model it replaces. Boot size has also grown by 28 litres.

On the hybrid front, it seems Aussie customers will be waiting longer than expected.

Every model in the 2026 range is powered by a carryover 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 132kW/242Nm, with Mazda deciding to drop the old car’s 2.0-litre engine for performance and efficiency reasons.

Mazda has also ruled out a turbo version of the 2.5-litre, saying, “Offering it in the line-up doesn’t make sense. We have to be patient and wait for the hybrid.”

And on the hybrid front, it seems Aussie customers will be waiting longer than expected.

“The hybrid CX-5 powertrain is in its latest stages of development and it’ll be available in the US next year and then in Australia thereafter,” said Gieschen.

Asked if that meant a likely 2028 debut for the hybrid, Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said: “Yeah, it’s not going to be any earlier than that. From our point of view, US will be first and then we’ll fall into sequence. If you look at our history, we’re never the last country, sometimes we’re not the first, even though we’d like to be.”

The new-gen CX-5 will debut Mazda’s new hybrid system, which is being developed entirely in-house. Mazda told Open Road the hybrid powertrain, dubbed ‘Skyactiv Z’, will offer driveability improvements as well as efficiency gains of 20-30 per cent.
